SET IN STONE

The goal of this live performance piece was to reverse the traditional gender roles set by hip hop videos, specifically the objectification of women. To realize this, I collaborated with students from both the School of Art and Drama as well as CMU’s K-Pop group “Seoul Style” in order to flip traditional gender roles by combining dance, art, and music. Men were portrayed as statues, almost fully naked, like objects. In contrast, the women in the piece were fully clothed. The whole piece is viewed by a little boy sitting in front of the audience, whose clearly self conscious by the end of the piece and questioning his self-image. The further contrast between the perverse severity of the theme and the innocence of the child is intended to heighten the discomfort of the audience.
