MONTHLY SELF PORTRAIT SERIES
Every month I try to take time to draw a self-portrait using different materials and techniques without using a reference image. The result is that through drawing, I learn more about my perception of myself and my image.
My goal in this drawing was to tell a meta-narrative in which I am trying to draw a self-portrait, but am having a hard time seeing myself behind the blank canvas. If I could only rip off the rest of the canvas that is blocking me from coming through...

Experimenting with watercolors, I used warm color and a cold color to capture different parts of myself. I avoided painting the complete picture to acknowledge that the whole is much more complex.

One of the beginning pieces in my series as I began to consider drawing several self-portraits. I began by viewing myself as an artist drawing myself from a sketch. My intention was that my drawn “self” would appear on the other side of the page, flipping traditional perspective on its head.

I drew this with two different pens, one in each hand, keeping both on the page without taking them off, until I felt I could see myself in both colors.

My first digital self-portrait exploring Photoshop’s paintbrush features and textures, without an underlying image.

This self-portrait explores different perspectives. The hat symbolizes my future. The "buildings" on the hat are drawn in 5 point perspective.

Over winter break learning about negative space.

Drawn this semester after switching to the Art School curriculum. This is the first self portrait where I am smiling!

This is my latest self-portrait with a beard using paint pens. I have been using these colors a lot more in my work.
